ACME CANINE'S DOG OF THE MONTH
April Dog of the Month
Mike and I adopted Rory when he was just 6 months old. We
read all the right books and did all the right research to make sure we got the
dog that was right for us. Rory was immediately the sweetest most loving dog.
What we realized quickly was that he lacked the confidence to be alone when we
had to go to work or even make a quick trip to the grocery store. He would be
destructive, have potty accidents, spin and dig, and even break out of his
crate at times.
We went to two other trainers/behaviorists and got several
veterinarian opinions. We battled his separation anxiety for 9 months before
finding Acme Canine. Rory attended a 2 week intensive training where he stayed
with Acme Canine. He came back a brand new dog, and continues to visit Acme
Canine to keep him balanced. Though, it has been a long battle and requires
continuous work, Rory is on the road to recovery and is doing great.
It has
been a year since he first visited Acme Canine and it has still been a rocky
year, but he is making great progress. He is now 2 yr 4 mo. and Acme Canine has
trained us as dog owners on what challenges him and gives him confidence and
control. He is happier and more stable than ever.
I feel like we are
finally on the right track and have a happier more confident companion and
family member. We are continuing to build on his skills in the Intermediate
Off-Leash training course. Jessica Villalta, 2/25/10
Congratulations Mike & Jessica on being a responsible dog owners and to Rory,
our April dog of
the month!

WHAT'S NEW AT ACME CANINE
We're reducing our ecological paw print
Acme Canine considered how the decisions we make for our company can affect dogs and their world. A few simple changes in our business routine have made a dramatic impact.
In addition to our energy efficient building and the practice of recycling and composting, here are some changes we've made for acting globally, which benefit our clients and their dogs, too.
Collar exchange program: Purchase a training collar from us and just trade it in for a new collar each time your dog grows.
Cloth towels to replace paper ones: We are doing our part to help reduce the 3,000 tons of paper towels thrown away each day.
Using biodegradable cleaning products, organic shampoos and natural fiber towels.
Vermicomposting our office paper waste
Eco setting default on our copier.
Use of probiotics in septic system and refraining from the use of chemicals on the grass.
We will continue to incorpprate ways to reduce, reuse and recycle while maintaining quality and integrity in the business.
Join us April 21st to learn ways you and your dog can reduce your carbon foot and paw print.

Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month
National Pet First Aid Awareness Month

Originally appearing in BARK Issue #41, Mar/Apr 2007
A basic truth about humans and dogs: We live in overlapping but not identical sensory worlds. To a pup, we are sort of like the Brobdingnagians of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, extra-large beings whose ways just don’t all make perfect sense. That’s a hard position to be in, because your dog’s world is controlled by you. Making matters more difficult still, a dog can’t explain to you what you’re failing to understand about him. While we live in a world of language, dogs communicate via a variety of other means. for more information click here
Wide Variation in Calorie Content Among 'Low Calorie' Pet Foods
Dog and cat owners buying weight-control diets for their overweight pets are faced with a confusing two-fold variation in calorie density, recommended intake, and wide range cost of low-calorie pet foods, according to a study by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.
The study, published this month in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, examined nearly 100 commercially available diets with weight management claims. for more information click here
