ACME CANINE'S
DOG OF THE MONTH

August Dog of the Month
Stella
You can teach an old dog new tricks and 9 year old Stella is proof!

In June 2009 we started training Stella through private lessons.   Stella had no discipline or boundaries in her life prior to this.  Phil travelled frequently and his housekeeper took care of the dogs.  When the Yandolinos first contacted us it was mainly for canine coaching and to help build respect.  Ronalee had never owned a dog and was in over her head with Stella.    We helped build a foundation for Stella and taught Ronalee the tools to improve her confidence.

In April, 2010  the Yandolinos contacted  us again because Stella had gotten worse and was now herding children.    Stella didn't like the activity and chaos.  She also didn’t like things out of place or loud noises.  We suggested a residency to work Stella through all this and more.

Stella was a very good student and worked very hard.   She also spent time outdoors to stretch her legs and enjoy the fresh air.  She graduated from training and has continued to show improvement as far as showing respect and reliability in various situations.

The Yandolinos understand that training is a team effort and have continued to work obedience as a way of life for Stella.  They also have taken on the responsibility of being a good leader to Stella and help her through situations when her choice is not  the best.

Congratulations to Stella for being Acme Canine's August Dog of the Month and to the Yandolinos for being responsible dog owners.

The Dog Days of Summer
The Hot Season's Nickname Originates with the Brightest Star Sirius

By Kelly Whitt/ suite101.com
It may seem odd that the brightest star in the sky and one associated with the cold nights of winter would be the source of the saying "the Dog Days of Summer," but it is. (read more)

Schedule Changes for
Dogs and Puppies
by Lori Verni
When the lazy days of summer begin to come to an end, many people’s schedules undergo big changes. While temperatures may still be a little bit summery, many people’s schedules will not.

For many teachers, students and parents, the beginning of the school year brings about a big change in schedule. Instead of being at home most of the time, many people will find themselves out of the house more than in recent months.

For dogs, this change in schedule can be a difficult adjustment. But there are steps you can take to help prepare your pet for being at home alone more often.

Laura Pakis of Acme Canine and Mark Weilbacher of Acme Hotdog & Sausage Company share the same name, but they didn’t know each other. They also share more than a name; they share a philosophy and ideal of how to run their businesses. And they also share a common interest in dogs, just not the same kind of dogs. Be Careful with Your Dog Around Treated Wood
by Helen Fazio, Travel Dog Blogger, www.traveldogbooks.com
Even though the industry is changing, arsenic-treated wood is still frequently sold for use in decking and outdoor flooring materials. You’ll know it by the yellowish tint of the wood.
It is not advisable to feed your dog foods such as ice cubes, snacks or bones that he can eat directly off the treated wood. If you have such outdoor flooring, let your dog eat his burger on the grass.

Heatstroke (Hyperthermia)
Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith
Heatstroke occurs when normal body mechanisms cannot keep the body's temperature in a safe range. Animals do not have efficient cooling systems (like humans who sweat) and get overheated easily. A dog with moderate heatstroke (body temperature from 104º to 106ºF) can recover within an hour if given prompt first aid and veterinary care (normal body temperature is 100-102.5°F). Severe heatstroke (body temperature over 106ºF) can be deadly and immediate veterinary assistance is needed. (READ MORE...)

 Products to Keep Your
Pet Cool
Who doesn’t like a frozen treat?
Well now your dog can join in the good times too.  There are a variety of toys from chilly bones (a fabric toy with a sponge center) to kool dogz (an ice treat maker) which can cool your dog internally.  Or if you need to cool your dog down externally there are collars, vests and beds which contain cooling materials and stay cool for hours during these hot summer days.
