ACME CANINE'S DOG OF THE MONTH

 Gracie
Gracie is a 9 month old Australian Shepherd who just completed on leash camp at Acme .  Canine.

Gracie's owner, Jen Hetzler, wanted her to have the freedom of a well trained dog even though Gracie is deaf and has some vision problems.

Gracie had our hearts immediately and we were happy to  train Gracie using hand signals and a coding technique on the e-collar.

Training a deaf dog requires a major commitment and lots of patience.  Jen is just that person.  She is dedicated to Gracie and willing to do what is necessary for the safety and well being of her pet.

Congratulations Jen on being a responsible dog owner and to Gracie, our March dog of the month!

A Happy Way to Get Fit
by Allison Takeda

When it comes to getting active, you may be better off investing in a dog than a gym membership.

Researchers in Great Britain recently surveyed 5000 people and found that those with dogs exercised up to six hours more a week than those who worked out at a gym or on their own.
Acme Canine is partnering with personal trainer, Stacy Gotti, in April for Fitness with Fido.

The tell tail clue to a happy dog... they wag it to the left
By Jonathon Petre

Welcome sign: A wag to the left is friendlier than one to the right

Everyone knows that if a dog's ears are up and its tail is wagging vigorously, it is definitely pleased to see you.

Now, scientists using a robot have found that the way dogs use their tails is more subtle than we thought and that dogs that wag them to the left may be more friendly.

WHAT'S NEW AT
ACME CANINE
  Avoid the bite

Every year it is estimated that between 4 – 5 million people are bit by dogs. Of these bites some are nips, others are major attacks, and over half the bites occur on children. Through education many of these attacks can be prevented. When they do occur, children can know how to respond to reduce the severity of the attack.

Acme Canine is hosting Avoid the Bite workshop for Friday, March 26 at 6:00pm at their facility in Lewis Center.  During this workshop you will experience how to approach dogs as well as determine a dog's body language. Attendees will learn tips on how to avoid being attacked and what to do if they are attacked.

Cost $20. Class size is limited to 20 individuals since role playing and other activities will occur

Tank is buckled up for safety
 Why Buckle up Your Pet?
www.barkbuckleup.com
Bark Buckle UP campaign educates pet parents on how to put on and take off safety pet belts and the importance of securing their pet safely for travel.

While most of us, spurred by safety concerns and government regulations, wear seat belts as a matter of course, we don't always think about restraining our dogs when they're our passengers. But going without a restraint poses dangers to dogs and drivers alike. In the event of a sudden stop or accident, a dog can become a flying projectile that can injure you, your passengers or be thrown through the windshield. Accidents do happen everyday.   Luke Robinson

FOR CANCER, HE'S WALKING 2,000 MILES WITH 2 DOGS
From TODAY correspondent Jill Rappaport msnbc

When Luke Robinson's beloved dog Malcolm died of bone cancer, his world was shattered. He had lost his best friend and didn't understand why, so he took action. In March 2008, Luke and his two other Great Pyrenees pooches embarked on a walk for life called "2 dogs, 2,000 miles." They started in Austin, Texas, and are hoping to reach Boston by this spring. Their goal is to raise awareness for animal cancer, and they are hoping to get some answers to this dreadful disease along the way. (read more...)
