ACME CANINE'S
DOG OF THE MONTH

Ozzie
November Dog
of the Month
Ozzie, a 2 year old German Shepherd/Chow mix, was hand raised by two girls.  Later he was given up by the family, due to divorce, to a rescue worker who has 6 acres and believes in giving  dogs the freedom to be dogs.

Ozzie stayed on this farm for about 1 year wearing only a beacon collar to help locate him.  He came in with the pack to eat and for interaction with the rescue worker.   Ozzie had a car chasing problem and the rescue worker believed it best for Ozzie to be in an only dog home.
Sharon and Dick are animal lovers and take in rescues (2 donkeys, 3 horses, several cats and Ozzie).  They wanted the best for Ozzie but didn’t know how to achieve it.  Their main concerns included setting boundaries, not chasing cars, getting along with the other animals and walking with Dick in the woods without a leash.  It should also be noted that this beautiful and friendly guy with a happy go lucky personality was also showing some separation issues and a bit of dominance.

Not everyone can be trusted to train with an e-collar but the Pickens are level headed responsible dog owners who understand the pros and cons of using such a tool.

Ozzie went through our e-touch program.  Today he is no longer chasing cars.  His barking at the other animals has reduced, and he only does it when he is revved up and wants to "play". Ozzie is doing all his commands with a sense of satisfaction and is enjoying his “off leash” walks in the woods with Dave.

The staff at Acme Canine is proud to have Ozzie as our November Dog of the Month and the Pickens as our clients.

Thanksgiving Safety for Dogs:  Stuff the turkey, not your dog
Ahhh, the aroma of a fresh, mouthwatering, roasting turkey in the oven, Mom's cornbread stuffing cooling on the counter, sweet, spicy pumpkin pie tempting your passions. But don't forget the happy, little furry-feet, following your every move!

Yep, its Thanksgiving! A time to be thankful for all we have, for those around us we love, including our canine friends. Many people share the family feast with their dog in an offering of thanks and love. While this is an innocent and seemingly gracious and loving gesture, the truth is, it's more loving not to share your holiday meals with your dog. While it may seem that a little bit of turkey skin here and a little bit of stuffing there wouldn't hurt, we know how quickly the pounds can add up over the holiday season. The same rules that apply to us apply to our pets. A diet high in fat and being overweight is very unhealthy for them. (read more)

 WHAT'S NEW
 AT ACME CANINE
Dog Toy Focus Group
by Lisa Scheffel, CPT
Dogs are very particular when it comes to their toy selection.  What better way to gauge a toy’s “likability” than to let dogs try it!  There were three dogs on our panel in the September focus group:   Bruno, a Rhodesian Ridgeback; Gracie, an Australian Shepherd; and Moose, an English Mastiff.

We offered a wide variety of toys to our panel of testers.  Dogs may be tough critics but they are sure to give their unbiased opinion.  The dogs were relentless with the selection of chew toys and Nuts for Knots tug toys.  The retrieval items such as the 10” retrieval toy made of fire hose and the Kong Training Dummy did not receive rave reviews.  However, the interactive, problem solving game called Dog Tornado was a huge hit!

The dogs in the focus group offered a good deal of insight to dog owners and staff at Acme Canine.  We all had a great time!  We would like to thank all of the participants for making the toy test a huge success.

We are excited to offer our next toy test workshop on November 13 at 2:30pm.  Sign up today and join in the fun!  Christmas is just around the corner.  Surprise your dog with his favorite toy in his stocking!

We will be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day to enjoy time with our families.

Indoor Activities for Dogs
Inclement weather may stop you from taking your dog outdoors, but indoor games and activities can provide the dog with mental and physical stimulation while you wait for the sunshine to reappear. Games reduce the chance of behavioral problems that stem from pent-up energy and boredom, and indoor dog activities also give you an opportunity to work on obedience training.

Pumpkins are a Dog's Best Friend
by The team at Fido Dog Treats
Highly palatable pumpkin is liked by dogs and their owners who recognize its nutritional benefits. This super food is loaded with beta-carotene, which aids in cancer prevention, reduces inflammation and regulates Vitamin A. Vitamin C boosts basic immune functions, and the presence of Vitamin E also helps maintain healthy skin and coat.

Pumpkin is also high in fiber, which is vital to your dog's digestive health. A small amount of canned or fresh pumpkin puree is often recommended for dogs with upset stomachs and it is even known to help dogs who suffer from motion sickness. Stay away from pumpkin pie mix as it is loaded with sugar.
