ACME CANINE'S
DOG OF THE MONTH
September Dog of the Month
Harper is a 3 year old rescued Labrador Retriever with aggressive tendencies. Acme Canine views canine aggression as a dog that considers the option of growling, snarling, snapping or biting when they do not like the situation they are in; whether that is with a valued item being taken away, being in a strange environment or being change as to their 'pack status.'
March of this year Acme Canine assessed Harper for Paul and Roberta Brunner. Harper had started showing aggression toward other dogs on his walks around the neighborhood. They were relieved to learn that although aggression can not be removed from a dog's personality, it can be managed by lowering his stress level in everyday life situations.
Since Harper's aggression was toward dogs and not people we were able to do private lessons on a weekly basis to help establish a strong obedience foundation in order to provide Harper with the tools to control himself when he felt the urge to dominate other dogs.
The Brunners and Harper were very good students and worked very hard, but progress was slow to achieve.
July the Brunners decided to send Harper to us to work out more of his behavior issues. Harper spent his days at Acme Canine in a structured environment of training sessions, supervised playtimes, walks around the block and field trips to test Harper's ability to control himself around other dogs and in new environments. He also spent time outdoors to stretch his legs and enjoy the fresh air. Harper graduated from training and has continued to show improvement as far as showing respect and reliability in various situations.
The Brunners understand that training is a team effort and have continued to work obedience as a way of life for Harper. They have taken on the responsibility of being a good leader to Harper and have participated in Spike's Pool Party, Talking Dog and Pack to Basics to assist with managing Harper's aggressive tendencies.
In 5 months Harper has made great strides toward becoming a well manner member of society. We're proud of him and the dedication and hard work of the Brunners.
Congratulations to Harper for being Acme Canine's September Dog of the Month and to the Brunners for being responsible dog owners.

Delta police first in Canada to hire therapy dog
Delta police department's latest canine recruit is more likely to lick than growl.
The two-year-old male yellow Lab, the first police therapy dog in Canada, started six weeks of on-the-job training Monday, said Delta police spokeswoman Sgt. Sharlene Brooks.
Adding a dog to the department's victim services team is a new approach to helping people in traumatic situations, Brooks said.
The four-legged therapist will offer support and reassurance for "excessively emotional" people, she said. (read more)
